FAQs

WHAT ARE  MATTER “TEMPLATES”?

Matter Templates are sample legal budgets.  Clients and attorneys can use templates as a starting point when creating budgets for their own matters.  To help you select matters, each template title includes the case description (e.g., Employment Case, $200K Damages, Complexity 3).

WHAT RATES DO THE DIGITORY LEGAL TEMPLATES USE?

At this time, the Timekeeper rates used in the matter Templates are the U.S. Attorney’s Office’s (USAO) 2015-2016 Attorney’s Fees Matrix.  https://www.justice.gov/usao-dc/file/796471/download.  The USAO’s fee matrix is a set of rates used by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Washington D.C. when requesting reasonable attorneys fees under fee-shifting statutes.  The fee matrix is based on 2010-2011 ALM survey data updated using the Producer Price Index-Office of Lawyers (PPI-OL) index.

The USAO fee matrix rates may be too high for straightforward cases in smaller towns and too low for complex cases in cities like San Francisco or New York.  In these instances, it is easy to modify the timekeeper rates within the matter template.

HOW DO I COPY AND CUSTOMIZE PRIOR WORK PRODUCT?Screen Shot 2016-03-26 at 3.05.11 PM

To duplicate and customize a budget, click the three dots in the top right corner of the matter screen and select “Duplicate”.  This allows you to copy and re-use budgets.  Customize the duplicate budget by changing the parties/description, update the timekeepers/rates for the current team, and modify the budget entries as needed.

HOW DOES DIGITORY LEGAL CREATE ITS TEMPLATES?

Currently, matter templates are created by Digitory Legal Founder and CEO, Catherine Krow, a trial lawyer and a former litigation partner at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.  The drafts are then vetted by experts with 15+ years experience at top-tier firms.

WHERE DO OUR DEFAULT NUMBERS FOR DOCUMENTS PER GIGABYTE COME FROM?

The number of documents per gigabyte (GB) is highly variable and depends on the data file type.  10,000 documents per GB is a default number frequently used in the industry.  Those firms that track their GB statistics can easily adjust the number of documents and average cost per GB in their budgets.
